Young Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli celebrated his first Formula 1 Grand Prix victory at the race in Shanghai, winning from pole position. Behind him, his teammate George Russell completed a dominant one-two finish for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, while Antonelli’s predecessor at Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton, finished third for Scuderia Ferrari.
As already seen at the season opener in Melbourne, the race again turned into a battle between Mercedes and Ferrari, with the rest of the field unable to keep up. Both drivers from the McLaren F1 Team, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, were unable to start the race due to technical issues. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen had to retire his Red Bull Racing after a difficult weekend, parking the car while running sixth following a poor qualifying session and start.
Behind the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, young Briton Oliver Bearman delivered an impressive drive to finish fifth in the Haas. He was followed by Pierre Gasly in the Alpine and the two Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. Carlos Sainz Jr. surprised with ninth place in the struggling Williams Racing, while Franco Colapinto scored his first points by finishing tenth.
In Saturday’s Sprint race, George Russell dominated ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The remaining points positions went to Kimi Antonelli, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman.
The next round of the Formula One season will take place at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka. The races originally scheduled in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have been postponed to April due to the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict.
