With the new Madring, Formula 1 celebrated its return to Madrid. Around 45 years after the last Spanish Grand Prix in the Madrid region at Jarama, the championship visited the brand-new street circuit built around the IFEMA exhibition centre. The circuit, completed only shortly before the race weekend, was cleverly integrated into the existing exhibition complex. Several halls form part of the event infrastructure, giving the venue a unique atmosphere. The new facility also features the largest paddock and one of the longest pit lanes in Formula 1 history. The circuit itself, however, did not receive universal praise. Overtaking proved particularly difficult through the very fast concrete-lined sections of the track. The spectator facilities were much more convincing. Fans could travel from Madrid city centre to the circuit by Metro in around 20 minutes. Numerous VIP clubs and approximately 80,000 grandstand seats provided excellent conditions for spectators. The first Grand Prix at the Madring was won by Kimi Antonelli. The Mercedes driver benefited from a perfectly timed Virtual Safety Car period. Long-time leader Lando Norris was unable to make his pit stop at the ideal moment and eventually had to settle for third place. Antonelli won ahead of a very strong Max Verstappen, with Lando Norris completing the podium. Charles Leclerc finished fourth ahead of George Russell and Liam Lawson. Franco Colapinto, the disappointing Oscar Piastri, Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hülkenberg completed the Top 10. With the victory, Antonelli extended his lead in the World Championship. He now has 292 points, ahead of George Russell on 211 and Lewis Hamilton on 191. The next round takes place in Baku, where the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will unusually be held on Saturday, 26 September.
